U.S. Navy To Equip 5 Arleigh-Burke Class Destroyers With AI Vessel Detection System (opens in a new tab)
The U.S. Navy will equip five Arleigh Burke-class destroyers with Applied Intuition’s $25 million AI-powered Intelligent Perception System (IPS) to enhance vessel detection. The system integrates infrared sensors, cameras, and navigation feeds to automatically identify, track, and predict maritime threats in real time, reducing human error risks. IPS processes data onboard using edge computing and logs ship traffic digitally for faster analysis and fleet-wide intelligence sharing. It also supports machine learning model updates by transmitting sensor data to shore stations when bandwidth permits.
