South Korea’s South Gyeongsang Province has requested approval to designate waters off Geoje Island as an autonomous-ship operating zone, enabling Samsung Heavy Industries to continue sea trials after its current regulatory exemption ends in 2026. The proposed area covers coastal waters near Hansan, Gajo, and Chilcheon islands, with a decision expected by year-end. Samsung Heavy is testing a 12-meter autonomous vessel featuring AI-based navigation, collision avoidance, and sensor systems. The province aims to support the technology while minimizing disruptions to fishing, shipping, and leisure activities.
